Gas Detectors | Companies

A gas detector detects different gases in an area, usually as part of a safety system. An industrial process can then be shut down. A gas detection system can also sound an alarm in an area where the leak is, giving operators opportunity to escape. Gas detectors can be used to detect oxygen depletion, combustible, flammable and toxic gases.

These devices are used widely in industry in a variety of locations i.e. oil rigs to monitor manufacture processes and emerging technologies. Alarms and flashing lights are sounded when dangerous levels of gas vapours are detected. Gas detection equipment measures a gas concentration against a calibration gas that acts as a reference point. In the early days of gas detection gas monitors detected a single gas, but a modern gas monitor can detect several toxic or combustible gases, or even combinations.

Gas detection monitors are either portable or stationary devices. Portable gas detectors are usually battery operated. A portable gas detector is used to monitor the atmosphere around personnel and is worn on clothing or on a belt/harness. The second type of gas detection system is more of a fixed type and they are generally mounted near the process area of a plant or control room.

Gas detectors have varying operation mechanisms (semiconductors, oxidation, catalytic, infrared, etc). All gas detectors must be calibrated. Portables must be calibrated more frequently due to the regular changes in environment they experience. A typical calibration schedule for a fixed system may be quarterly, bi-annually or even annually with some of the more robust units. A typical calibration schedule for portable gas detection is a daily bump test accompanied by a monthly calibration. Nearly every portable gas detector has a specific calibration gas which is available from the manufacturer.
